Veganism has rocketed in the UK over the past couple of years - from an estimated half a million people in 2016 to more than 3.5 million - 5% of our population - today. They just require a single keystroke to type and so are no more difficult to type than a lower case letter, yet some people still make a massive deal out of punctuation being this big awkward monster of a thing that they have to learn to cope with. commas, periods, apostrophes and hyphens don't require use of the shift keys. The main thing to note is that all the common punctuation characters i.e. If you ignore capital letters (because that's really just about learning shift keys) then it's pretty much all about knowing where the comma and period keys are. The number of hyphens in this article was higher than you would normally expect, and equally there were no apostrophes which was a little surprising. That's 95% of what you will have to deal with. If you want to master real world punctuation it boils down to Capital letters, commas and periods. This lines up with research that I have done using long quotes from Typeracer and output from Monkeytype word lists with punctuation turned on. Interesting to note, that in the article I typed (shown below), there were 17 capital letters, 15 commas, 7 periods, 7 hyphens and 1 pair of brackets. I'm definitely going to stick with and see what happens. I think once you pass a 'break in' period and have fully acclimatized to practicing in this way, you should probably see a return to your 10k speed. I must say, the weirdest and hardest thing was not looking at the window where I was actually typing, but instead keeping my eyes fixed on the window I was reading from.

Looking at the words in this section of an article that I have just typed from the Guardian newspaper website, they're on a par with English 10k. It's a great tip though because if you pick the right content, you get a lot of challenging words thrown at you. I think the best thing to do afterwards, provided you have the option is the paste the words you have typed into something like MS Word or Google Docs so that the spell check function can highlight where you have gone wrong. Of course, you get 100% accuracy in this mode. I have just tried this and I got 48.44 wpm.
